Buenavista de Cuellar

Here you'll see several photos of our wonderful week in Buenavista de Cuellar in the state of Guerrero. Our time in Guerrero included a visit to Taxco, Mexico's silver capital, as well as to various places of interest in the town as well as many fun activites. Among the photos you'll see are scenes from our visit to the maquiladora pants factory and the DIF, the center that serves Buenavista's lower income community, and Buenavista's Centro de Salud, where we saw patients being assisted through Mexico's Oportunidades and Salud Popular healthcare programs. Enjoy!

Bienvenidos a Mexico!

Bienvenidos a Mexico! We arrived five days ago to Mexico City and traveled by bus to a town in the mountains near Cuernavaca, in the state of Guerrero. The town is called Buenavista de Cuellar and the views are spectacular! The streets are cobblestone and steep, and every morning we see men riding their donkeys into the hills to feed and milk their cows. On the day we arrived, the town was celebrating the last day of its week-long fair, complete with a variety show that featured a comedian doing impersonations, amusement park rides, and delicious food. In these first few days, we've been to to Taxco, Mexico's silver capital, visted a maquiladora factory in Buenavista, toured the DIF which supports families in the town with health, nutrition and other social services, gone swimming, taken salsa dancing lessons, learned to cook tamales and enchiladas, pounded leather into sandals and belts, volunteered with a local physical therapist, learned about local herbal remedies, and climbed 365 steps to a church on a mountaintop. The students and staff of the Carroll University 2010 Mexico NCEP invite you to keep track of the next two weeks of our trip through our new blog, and follow us as we travel to Cuernavaca... a viajar!
